Scanning for Prostate Cancer Patients – Cork University Hospital

ALLIANCE MEDICAL Cork University Hospital PET/CT commenced 18F PSMA scanning for Prostate Cancer patients.

The PET CT department in Cork University Hospital has started scanning prostate cancer patients with the new radiotracer 18F-PSMA-1007 in February 2022.

PET/CT AMDI Cork: On the 15th February this year, the first prostate cancer patient was scanned at the PET/CT unit at Cork University Hospital, an EARL accredited centre of excellence, using the novel radiotracer 18F-PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen).

PET CT using 18F PSMA is a diagnostic tool used to restage prostate cancer patients who present with biochemical failure post treatment. Previously, patients had to travel abroad to have this critical scan performed. CUH is currently the only hospital outside of Dublin performing this type of scan.

What is better about this tracer for prostate cancer patients PET CT scans?

It allows for better visualisation of the pelvis due to low urinary excretion of the tracer and can better identify metastatic spread in the pelvis and other areas compared to conventional PETCT studies.

The tracer is produced in a cyclotron, which means larger amounts can be produced and can be delivered to remote sites more easily, improving availability.

A PSMA PET CT scan can give a clinical teams can lead to a more accurate diagnosis for prostate cancer patients.

From planning of the service to commencement, international guidelines were followed in line with the EANM (European Association of Nuclear Medicine) Guidelines 2021. All relevant stakeholders were consulted to establish the clinical requirements and protocols. Referrals are vetted by consultant radiologists specialising in PETCT.

The service is available to public patients of Cork University hospital and partner hospitals in the region.
